FAQ

The Answers You Need

IS A DEPOSIT RECOMMENDED?

Yes. We highly recommend placing a deposit for one of our litters, as we only have puppies a couple of times a year. This is even more important if you are wanting a particular gender, or are hoping to get a puppy from a particular mother or father. Our deposits are non-refundable and $500, and ensure you a spot on our waiting list.

IS A MALE OR FEMALE PUPPY A BETTER CHOICE FOR MY FAMILY?

One of your first considerations when selecting a male or female puppy should be the weight and height of an adult English Cream Golden Retriever. Males measure about 23 – 24 inches (58-61 cm) in height at withers (shoulder) and weigh approximately 70 to 85 lbs. Females stand 21-1/2 – 22-1/2 inches (55-57 cm) at the withers and weigh approximately 65 to 75 pounds once they are adults. The difference in the temperament of a male and a female is often unnoticeable. When considering this question, feel free to ask us, as we spend copious amounts of time with our puppies day in and out, allowing you to decide for yourself what personality will mesh with your lifestyle and family best.

I WORK DURING THE DAY. IS IT STILL OK TO GET A PUPPY?

Absolutely! We recommend purchasing a puppy playpen while your puppy is young so that they can relieve themselves and play safely while you are away from the home. A consistent exercise program before and after work is going to be a necessity. Doggy daycare or dog walking services are viable alternatives to helping busy families enjoy their new family member.

DO THEY SHED?

While English Goldens tend to shed less than American Goldens, shedding will still occur. This can be minimized by regular grooming and quality food, with an added omega supplement (we recommend cod liver or fish oil!)

SHOULD I CRATE TRAIN MY NEW PUPPY?

Yes, we are firm believers in crate training- both for the safety and security of your puppy and the home. Crate training is extremely beneficial when traveling, being in a new household, and for sleeping. Puppies adapt quickly and learn that their crate is their "den" or place to call their own. Adult Males require a crate that is 40” long, 26” wide, and 32” tall or taller. Adult females require a crate that is 36” long, 24” wide, and 32” tall.  We recommend that dog owners use an adult male sized crate for both males and females. The extra space allows them to stretch out. You will soon discover all their goofy back sleeping positions!

HOW MUCH EXERCISE DOES A GOLDEN RETREIVER NEED?

A peaceful and relaxed dog or puppy requires a minimum of 20 minutes of meaningful physical (fetch, off-lead walking, etc.) exercise daily. A Kong chew toy, antler, or puzzle ball will keep their mind occupied during your absences – providing further mental stimulation. Young puppies should not be forced into strenuous physical activities (jogging, biking, etc.) until after 18 months of age to shield their joints from serious injury.
